Gradient lenses are built to handle one specific problem well: glare that comes from above while still letting you see clearly everywhere else. That makes them a strong fit for a wide range of everyday and outdoor situations, but which version you reach for — polarized or non-polarized — depends on what you're doing and how much glare you're dealing with.

Non-Polarized Gradient: Best For

Non-polarized gradient lenses give you the classic fade without an added glare filter. They're a great fit for:

  • Everyday wear — running errands, commuting, or wearing your sunglasses most of the day without needing maximum glare protection
  • Driving — the darker top cuts overhead sun while the lighter bottom keeps your dashboard easy to read
  • Moving between light and shade — walking in and out of buildings, covered patios, or tree cover without your lenses feeling too dark indoors
  • Fashion-forward looks — non-polarized gradients tend to run lighter overall, so they show off more color and are popular for style-first frames

Because they're lighter overall, non-polarized gradients are best in low-to-medium light rather than the harshest midday sun or highly reflective conditions.

Polarized Gradient: Best For

Polarized gradient lenses add a glare-cutting filter on top of the fade, which makes them a better match for:

  • Water and snow — glare reflecting off the surface can be intense, and polarization cuts that horizontal glare significantly
  • Long days in bright sun — fishing, boating, or spending extended time outdoors in strong light
  • High-glare driving conditions — wet roads, bright highways, or long stretches with a low sun angle
  • Sports and outdoor activity — where cutting reflected glare improves visual comfort and reduces eye strain over time

One thing to keep in mind: polarized lenses can occasionally make certain digital screens (phone, dashboard displays, ATMs) harder to read at some angles. It's a quirk of polarization itself, not something specific to the gradient tint.

Grouping Our Gradient Colors by VLT

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) tells you how much light passes through a lens — the lower the number, the darker the lens. Here's how our four gradient colors group up by their non-polarized VLT:

Lightest (Highest VLT)

  • Coastal Blue Gradient — 55% VLT (non-polarized)

This is our lightest non-polarized option by a wide margin, best suited to overcast days, indoor-outdoor transitions, or anyone who prefers a subtler tint.

Mid-Range

  • Gray Green Gradient — 27% VLT (non-polarized)
  • Dark Brown Gradient — 27% VLT (non-polarized)

These sit in the middle of our lineup — dark enough for regular sunny-day wear, light enough to still work well indoors or in shade.

Darkest

  • Stealth Black Gradient — 14% VLT (non-polarized)

Our darkest non-polarized gradient, built for bright, sunny conditions where you want more consistent coverage.

A Note on Polarized VLT

All four of our polarized gradient colors land at the same 12% VLT. Once polarization is added, the glare-cutting filter itself does most of the work, so the darkness levels even out across colors — the choice between polarized colors comes down to tint and style rather than how dark the lens is.
